The Unforgettable Game

Date: 4/23/09
Opponent: Gardner South Wilmington
Result: 2-1 Win

This was a once in a lifetime game for the Lady Norsemen. The game on Tuesday, April 23rd against Gardner South Wilmington went 13 innings. The two teams were tied throughout the entire game. Gardner had bases loaded with no outs a few times in the extra innings putting pressure on Newark’s defense, but the girls played their best and didn’t let a run score.

In the top of the 13th inning, Teresa DiClementi shot a double into right center driving Miranda Schmidt in for the winning run. Gardner had the chance to get that run back. One by one Gardner filled up the bases and finally their clean-up hitter was up. She hit a far one out to right center. Everyone held their breath as the ball looked like it found a gap, but all of a sudden, Meghan Putty made a diving catch and threw out the runner at third base leaving the Lady Norsemen with a 2-1 victory.

Norsemen Baseball off to a Good Start

Date: 3/24/09
Opponent: ACC
Result: Won 5-3

The Norsemen opened their season on March 24th vs Aurora Central Catholic at home. Tyler Andersen got the start on the mound for the Norsemen. He went five innings and only gave up two hits along with two runs. Zach Hartman came into the game to replace Tyler in the sixth inning. Zach was throwing his best stuff that day and worked himself into a jam. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Russell McGrath bailed Zach out by turning a 4-3 unassisted triple play, possibly the first triple play ever turned in Newark History. The Norsemen defense was phenomenal throughout the game and so were their bats. They went on to prevail over ACC with a score of 5-3.

The Oswego East and Ottawa Marquette games were cancelled due to weather. Best of luck to the Norsemen as they are scheduled to play 29 games in the next 25 days.
