Lady Norsemen Basketball

The Lady Norsemen basketball team was ecstatic to begin their season on November 15th. The girls on the varsity team have very high hopes for this season. The freshmen are fitting in well with the older girls, but the biggest change is going to be how fast and physical the games become compared to junior high. Mr. Holman, the assistant coach, said it will get easier as they play more. Obviously, everyone is wondering if the girls are after a state title like the boys last year. Of course they want one, and they’re going to work as hard as possible to get one. When Mr. Holman was asked if he is a good enough coach to win state he had a good reply. He said, “Coaches do not win state, the team who plays wins the games. I think I’m a good enough coach to put the players in the best spots for them to succeed, which is all I can ask.” All there is left to do is wait and see. We’re looking forward to find out if there really is a championship again in Newark’s future.

Norsemen Basketball Season Begins!

Here in NCHS in the recent years the most exciting part of the year has been the basketball season. In the past seasons the team and community have had high aspirations of winning the state championship title last year’s Norsemen accomplished. But there’s only one problem in that, four out of our five starters graduated.

This year it is going to take more than talent to win; many of the players believe that the skies is the limit if the Norsemen play as a team and are in great shape along with demonstrating a great work ethic. When asked about this season Taylor Wright stated, “We can win the regional if we set our minds on it.” The Norsemen have won the regional for the past 3 years, and just because the team’s base is young, doesn’t mean that the winning ways have to stop. Taylor Wright said, “The keys to victory this season are, defense and proper execution on offense.” Here in Newark players pride themselves on their work ethic and showing the community that they can play and that they can win. When Taylor was asked about the goals for the season he responded confidently by saying, “I would love to make the All-Conference team, along with helping the Norsemen make a second appearance at the state finals this season.”

Girls' Basketball

Swish! There was a meeting on October 26 from 6 to 7 to sign up for girls basketball. Practices start on October 31; see Coaches Skelton or Holman for more details. Mr. Skelton became a coach for the fun of it, and he likes strategy and the completion of the sport. He has set up some goals this year; they are to win as much as possible, and develop the team as much as possible. He wants to make it to the state finals this year. Mr. Skelton says that he thinks the team can be competitive throughout the year. He says he thinks that they can win if they shoot the ball well. The fans are eager to see how well the girls team will do this year. Come out and support the team.
